See-Through Nightgowns and Lingerie - The Magic of the Right Fabric

Lighting is often deceptive, so don't depend on the pictures when searching for see-through underwear on the web. The simplest way to tell exactly how see-through a garment of any type might be is usually to go through the description to see if the textile type is stated. Chiffon is the most commonly used sheer textile. Lace can be quite revealing depending on the pattern, and the sheer sex appeal of bare skin behind rare black lace can't ever be over-stated. To be certain of buying something opaque, stick with satin or chameuse. A nightgown described as 'silk' could easily still be see-through when made out of silk chiffon.
Cotton voile and cotton lawn can both be revealing and are by no means opaque. When unprinted, voile is especially revealing. Lawn is often used as a dress fabric, which is a shame as it feels fabulous next to the skin. Romantic as well as luxurious, the translucency of cotton lawn also gives it sex-appeal. It may be the ultimate nightgown fabric.
Tulle is sometimes used to make wedding veils and is a very delicate fabric. Tulle was most fashionable duirng the 20s and 30s when it was often used to make delicate peignoir and wraps. The most luxurious type of tulle is silk tulle which feels extremely soft despite its net like appearance. Tulle is extremely transparent and can often be left unfinished as the edges do not fray.
Most transparent nightgowns are made from chiffon. Silk chiffon is the softest, most transparent and luxurious. Polyester chiffon is less transparent but more practical as it can be machine washed and is mostly non iron. A certainly wont want to answer your front door in a chiffon nightgown as a single layer of chiffon is very revealing. Chiffon edges are usually finished, and usually using a double seam, one reason why chiffon garments are often more expensive.
Printed or painted chiffon is more subtle than plain and not so obviously transparent. Hand-painted silk chiffon is a glorious fabric with all the draping qualities of silk and the wonderful sensation next to your skin, but provides just a list more coverage. Printed chiffon is also ideal for nightgowns. Depending on the design it can vary from transparent to almost completely opaque, but still soft and feminine.
Double georgette fabric is almost opaque and ideal if you want to provide the merest glimpse of the body beneath the nightgown. Silk double georgette feels fantastic. If your aim is to be subtly seductive then this is the fabric for you.
Organza is rarely used in nightgowns as it a stiff fabric, though still transparent. Organza works well as long as it is chosen for the right sort of design. It does not have the softness of chiffon, but can still produce excellent results.
Most women like to take a subtle approach to sex. Cotton lawn, double georgette and printed silk chiffons are the ideal fabrics.
